Bandung – The Gerakan Mahasiswa Pasundan (GMP), in collaboration with the West Java Provincial Parliament (DPRD Jabar), hosted the Pasanggiri Mieling Basa Sunda IV, a prestigious Sundanese language and culture competition, at the rooftop of the DPRD Jabar building. This event aimed to preserve and promote Sundanese language and culture among the younger generation, especially high school (SMA) and vocational school (SMK) students from across West Java.

The event, which took place on Saturday, February 22, 2025, saw participation from students in various competitions spanning five categories that tested their Sundanese language skills and knowledge of Sundanese culture. Participants competed for 17 trophies and educational cash prizes, further highlighting the importance of education and cultural preservation.

Key Figures in Attendance:

Ono Surono, Vice Chairman of DPRD West Java, Salehudin, M. HUM, Academic of Sundanese Literature from UNPAD, Romo Kiai Komarudin Ibnu Mikam, Betawi Language Activist, Akbarudin Sucipto, Cirebon Language Activist, and other local cultural figures.

In his remarks, Vice Chairman Ono Surono expressed pride in seeing the younger generation actively engage in preserving Sundanese culture. He acknowledged the importance of events like Pasanggiri Mieling Basa Sunda in strengthening the cultural identity of West Java and fostering deeper bonds among the youth across the province. He also encouraged continued initiatives for the long-term survival of the Sundanese language.

“This event is a positive step toward safeguarding the Sundanese language, which is not just a cultural asset, but also an essential part of West Java’s identity. I hope activities like this will inspire all of us to care for our cultural heritage,” said Ono Surono.

However, Rajo Galan, Chairman of GMP, expressed concerns over the lack of full support from the provincial government for such initiatives. He pointed out that while the government has assisted in promoting these activities, their contributions have been limited, with more concrete support needed to ensure the continued preservation and education of Sundanese culture.

“We are grateful for the attention and publicity provided, but we need more than just that. What we seek is full support for the sustainability of Sundanese culture, which is an integral part of our region’s identity,” stated Rajo Galan.

Despite these challenges, the event was met with enthusiastic participation from students across West Java, offering a platform for young people to connect with their roots and demonstrate their passion for local culture. It served as a significant milestone in fostering cultural awareness and appreciation.
